Why the Cover Looks Wider Than the Short

This surprises most people. A Short is filmed vertically at 9:16, but YouTube still stores its thumbnail in the same horizontal 16:9 slots it uses for every other video. What you download is usually a centre crop of the vertical frame, padded or trimmed to fit the wide canvas. That is not a fault in the extractor — it is the only cover file YouTube publishes for that Short.

Which Resolutions Shorts Have

Shorts follow the same five-file pattern as long-form uploads:

  • maxresdefault.jpg at 1280×720 — present when the creator set a custom cover.
  • sddefault.jpg at 640×480 and hqdefault.jpg at 480×360.
  • mqdefault.jpg at 320×180 and default.jpg at 120×90.
